Under the city wall of Xi’an, China, between Hanguang Gate and Zhuque Gate, there is a single-arch gate called “Wumu Gate,” known locally as Xiao Nanmen. Every morning, this area becomes bustling with activity as the morning market springs to life inside this gate.

Around six o’clock in the morning, while other parts of Xi’an are either still shrouded in the quiet of the just-passed night or already filled with the hustle and bustle of workers and the noise of traffic, Xiao Nanmen’s morning market stands out with its unique blend of leisurely bustle. The market vendors have already set up their stalls, offering a wide variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and breakfast snacks, attracting early risers to come and shop. The sounds of vendors shouting their wares and customers haggling over prices fill the air, creating a lively and vibrant scene.

People leisurely stroll through the market, enjoying the start of a new day. Whether they are local residents or tourists, everyone can feel a unique sense of local life and warmth in this small morning market.

In this expansive market, you can taste almost all traditional foods of Xi’an, with a focus on breakfast items. You’ll find stalls selling pig trotter buns, zenggao (steamed rice cakes), donkey meat sandwiches, egg and youtiao (fried dough sticks), fried chive pockets, and many more delicious treats. The abundance of food stalls offers an incredible variety of local delicacies.
