In 2018, CITIZEN launched the CITIZEN Caliber 0100 light-powered autonomous quartz movement as the pinnacle of its watchmaking skills. It is the world’s most accurate watch with annual accuracy of just ±1 second.

Eco-Drive is part of CITIZEN’s pursuit of more accurate and more beautiful watches. CITIZEN searched for a new type of material that would create a beautiful watch dial while allowing light to pass through to the solar cell that powers the watch.

In recent years, CITIZEN has developed watch models with dials featuring traditional Japanese washi paper. Washi paper is both thin and durable, and it allows light to pass through it, much like the paper screens and lanterns that have long been used in Japanese homes. Washi paper is the ideal material for a watch dial, providing both a beautiful appearance and the light needed to power the Eco-Drive movement.
Innovation in 2022 – an indigo washi paper dial
CITIZEN’s innovation in 2022 was a high-accuracy Eco-Drive model with an indigo washi paper dial dyed using traditional methods. The watch, powered by Eco-Drive, has high accuracy of ±1 second to ±5 seconds per year. The beautiful deep indigo color is also known as “Japan blue” and the Tosa washi paper is hand-dyed at a dyehouse in Tokushima Prefecture which carries out the entire dyeing process from cultivating the indigo plants and making the dye, to hand- dyeing the paper.
