Beauvais is not only famous for its airport, but it is also a very beautiful town in its old part with a famous cathedral, ancient streets and remains of medieval glory.

The MUDO-Musée de l'Oise, located at the foot of Beauvais Cathedral,  is housed in the former palace of the bishops-counts of Beauvais, which became a courthouse and then a museum at the end of the 20th century.

The Bishops' Residence
The MUDO-Musée de l’Oise is located in the former episcopal palace, residence of the bishops of Beauvais, counts of the city and peers of France. This very beautiful architectural ensemble was built at the foot of Beauvais Cathedral in the 12th century by Henri de France, brother of the king. It was built on the Roman rampart. In the 14th century, to assert his authority following a riot by the city's inhabitants, the bishop erected a fortified entrance with two towers.

Two centuries later, the main house was rebuilt by Bishop Louis Villiers de l'Isle Adam in a Renaissance spirit while retaining a characteristic Gothic decoration. Its facade is decorated with a staircase tower called the “clock tower” topped by a campanile housing three bells, including one dating from 1506.
In the attic, the majestic and imposing oak frame 14 meters high is one of the most spectacular elements of the old bishopric.

A palace with many uses
After the Revolution, the palace received several assignments: prefecture in 1800, again bishopric in 1822. Becoming a courthouse in 1846, it was included, on the initiative of Prosper Mérimée, on the list of historic monuments in 1848.

During the Second World War, the departmental museum installed in a building north of the cathedral fell victim to bombings. The saved works and objects are then temporarily stored in the attic of the former episcopal palace. In 1973, the judicial administration left the palace and made way for the collections of the Oise departmental museum, now MUDO-Musée de l'Oise.
