Pertussis, or whooping cough, is actually caused by a bacteria that affects the lining of our breathing passages and causes them to both become inflamed and narrowed. The predominant symptom of it is a very persistent, intense cough. You mentioned that your little three-month-old has started to cough and it would be best, if this is persistent, to take him to the doctor and get him checked out. The doctor can ask you more specific questions about it, maybe even hear him cough, and decide if it warrants further investigation or treatment. Now, whopping cough is a preventable disease.  Babies who are immunized against it have a very, very, very low chance, if at all, of getting it. So make sure that you and all other adults and children in your family have been immunized and just continue to watch your baby for concerning signs. If anything shows up that you're worried about, be sure to take your baby to the doctor. And generally speaking, kids 3 months and younger should never have a fever and shouldn't be sick. Have your child seen if you notice anything concerning. Good luck with everything and if you have any other questions for me, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at facebook.com/intermountainmoms and recommend us to your friends and family, too.
