Sometimes when you’re out wheeling,
Sometimes when you’re out wheeling, the weather is warm, and the road is easy. Sometimes, like when we did some Gold Fever Trail snow wheeling, it’s snowing sideways and everyone needs to get inside to take shelter from the storm. Of course, finding the unexpected is part of the fun of going out into nature, so you won’t see anyone complaining on this trip. The fact that we were all using 3-Peak-rated Nitto Nomad Grapplers also helped.

Previously, we had gone to Big Bear off road with a trio of Toyotas, so this time we wanted to do things a little differently by bringing three crossovers. The trail we took was meant to be one for beginners, but just as soon as we got up into the mountains, snow started coming down hard, and boy were we glad that our vehicles were overbuilt for what we had initially intended to do.
Speaking of those vehicles, they ended up being perfectly suited for the harsh weather we experienced. Host Mike Sabounchi traveled all the way down from Washington in his 2018 VW Golf Alltrack on 225/55R17 Nitto Nomad Grapplers to be joined by a pair of Crosstreks. Luis Nieto was driving his 2019 Subaru Crosstrek on 235/65R17 Nomad Grapplers, and Cody Rasmussen was in is 2018 Crosstrek on 225/55R17 Nomad Grapplers.
While driving through the snow can be fun, make sure to always have someone else with you in case you get into trouble, and know how to use your recovery gear before you leave. It’s very easy for a fun day in the snow to turn bad in a moment.
