Marine and maritime education and
Marine and maritime education and research is at the core of the University of Plymouth and our fundamental principles of “Advancing knowledge and transforming lives” are essential to our success.
The Marine Station serves as the base for our marine expeditionary work with exceptional teaching and research facilities and unique to higher education in the UK, the Marine Station is also a centre of excellence for diving that enables students to get professional diving qualifications and develop valuable industry-relevant skills. It is located within Plymouth Sound and is the focal part of our ‘Waterfront Campus’, with classrooms extending out into the natural environment.
At the Marine Station we utilise innovative technology to enhance student experience and to ensure that we retain a continuous relevance to requirements of industry and collaborative partners. The facilities have field equipment storage, changing facilities and it acts as a base for our research vessels. A fleet of seven vessels includes RV Falcon Spirit, a 14 metre catamaran which is used for teaching and research, along with Wavedancer an 11 meter research and diving support vessel. For Navigation training we have Take The Helm, a Dufour 445 Yacht and also fleet of smaller boats, for group practical sessions, individual project work and research spanning the collection of seabed and water samples to the acquisition of hydrographic survey and oceanographic datasets.
