In February 2017, Melbourne Writers Festival joined forces with Jaipur Literature Festival to transport the magic, colour and excitement of India's biggest literary celebration to Australia's City of Literature.
At the spectacular JLF Melbourne Opening Gala, we heard a keynote address from internationally acclaimed economist and bestselling author, Sanjeev Sanyal; an electrifying performance from Tamil rapper and singer, Sofia Ashraf; an evocative poetry reading by poet and novelist Sampurna Chattarji; and a special honouring of the land from an Indigenous and Indian perspective, in a unique collaborative Pranam ceremony between renowned Indian performers, Tara Rajkumar OAM, Shobha Sekhar, Nithya Gopu Solomon and Priya Srinivasan, and Keerray Woorroong women Gina Bundle, Vicki Couzens and Yaraan Couzens-Bundle.
With music, delicious food and both conversations and chaijitos flowing (our new favourite cocktail!), the JLF Melbourne Gala was a night to remember.
JLF Melbourne was held in collaboration with Melbourne Writers Festival, Teamwork Arts and Fed Square, supported by the Sidney Myer Fund and Arts Centre Melbourne for Asia TOPA.
