In this video I have discussed the famous poem of John Keats, "The Poetry of Earth (On the Grasshopper and Cricket)". There is a short biography of John Keats and a good recitation of the poem. Then I explained the poem line by line with Bengali meaning. Thus this video has become a reliable source of knowledge for the students of Class XII of WBCHSE, the English Honours Students and the WBSSC job aspirants.

Substance and Title:
================
In “The Poetry of Earth” Keats's gaze identifies the ‘the continuous celebration through the cycle of seasons’ in the mundane realities of life.
The songs of the grasshopper and cricket become the voice of eternity as their physical presence remains out of sight. Their chirping brings the vision of a deeper reality: the eternal beauty of nature which they have inherited and which finds expression through them. The poet presents a vivid nature of a summer noon where the grasshopper takes sensuous delight in the abundance (প্রাচুর্য) of nature and it sings in pure care-free joy.
Similarly, in winter when frost envelopes the earth, the warm chinks (গর্ত) behind a country that provide shelter to the cricket and its song carries on the resonance of the poetry of earth which indeed never comes to an end.
So, the title of the poem is appropriate and accordant to the theme of it.
'The Poetry of Earth' as a Sonnet:

Keats chose the Petrarchan or Italian sonnet form for The Poetry of Earth' consisting of an octave and a sestet. The rhyme scheme is abba abba cde cde. Just like a perfect sonnet in this poem we see, the octave presents the theme.The sestet draws a conclusion.
As a Romantic poem:
================
Romantic poetry always has a subjective view. It aims at the expression of individual feelings and emotions. The Poetry of Earth' is a romantic poem. The poet makes us see a world of romance and beauty in the mundane world of reality. He makes us hear the eternal music of nature in the chirp of the cricket and grasshopper. In this poem Keats has personified nature, and celebrated its beauty and vivacity. The eternal beauty of nature during different seasons like summer and winter is glorified through the music made by the grasshopper and the cricket. Like all Romantic poems, the poet here finds solace and comfort in the abundance of nature. It is the source of inspiration for his creation. Hence, the poem is an apt example of a Romantic poem
