Dune was the best sci-fi movie I watched in 2021. Of course for now. Maybe in December things might change ;) “Dune” or otherwise “The Desert Planet”, is a work of art that should be watched at least a couple of times and even read alongside if possible. That's why, in this video, I will share some basic information about both the movie, the novels that sourced it, and the Dune universe as a whole, and analyze a very important scene at the very beginning of the story, without giving any "spoilers". This is one of the most important scenes not only in this movie but in the entire history of sci-fi: The Gom Jabbar Test or the Test of Humanity. The story of Dune takes place in a galaxy far, far away from us. Thousands of years from now… At first glance, it seems like the story of a young man named Paul. But as we progress, we sense hundreds of different paths of dozens of different characters intersecting with each other. Just like our life. Just like the fate that Paul foresaw. It's not just that its genre being science fiction that makes me love the movie, and even more so the novel series which was its inspiration. It also has a lot of things to say in the fields of ecology, politics, and philosophy. Although it takes place in a very distant future, while reading/watching it, it is as if you see some details from the past and present and experience a kind of déjà vu. You navigate through a feudal world with an evil emperor, noble houses, families, and subjugated peoples on the eve of a crisis where the threat of war is running in the air. You are on a journey through the history of mythology and religions. The author of the work, Frank Herbert, was not only geographically inspired by the Middle Eastern part of our world when creating the desert planet. But also, he quoted from holy texts such as the Bible, the Torah, and the Qur'an, often without any changes.
