Lead Acid batteries need periodic maintenance.
I do preventive maintenance on my car battery every six month. A thorough cleaning, check/refill with distilled water, and peak charge will extend the life of your battery.
Lead acid batteries fail because they are not properly maintained. The alternator in your vehicle does not provide an adequate charge to prevent sulfation build up inside the battery which eventually results in the internal resistance of the battery to become so great the battery will no longer take or hold a charge.
Never leave a lead acid battery sit around without a maintenance charger connected or the battery will not be usable when you need it and the life of the battery will be greatly reduced.
My OEM battery is nearly 5 years old. Most batteries are rated at 24 or 72 months of usage. Using a "Smart" charger will prevent the sulfation build up which kills lead acid batteries.
