Katarina Rukavina, MD, PhD, King's College London & King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK, discusses her study in which neurologists working in Europe were surveyed on the challenges in treating patients with long-term neurological conditions. Neurological conditions are increasing in prevalence and emerging as a leading cause of disability worldwide, and Europe is particularly vulnerable due to its aging population. Patients with long-term neurological conditions experience complex and refractory symptoms for the rest of their lives and often require hospitalization. To better understand the challenges involved in managing these conditions, over 150 neurologists were surveyed. A majority expressed dissatisfaction with the psychosocial and spiritual support offered to patients when they experienced acute worsening. Many also stated that availability of long-term healthcare is not optimal. Dr Rukavina also highlights disparities between northwest and southeast Europe. Neurologists in the south and east expressed concerns much more frequently. This interview took place at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Helsinki, Finland.
