The unique ceremony is a rite of passage for students in CUNY Medicine’s accelerated 7-year BS/MD program: they first receive their BS degree, having completed the rigorous three-year Sophie Davis Program in Biomedical Education, and they officially become “student doctors” through a formal White Coat Ceremony, an iconic ritual that emphasizes compassionate, collaborative, scientifically excellent care from the first day of medical school. Speakers included Carmen Renee Green, MD, Dean of the CUNY School of Medicine; Jordan J. Cohen, MD, Chair Emeritus of The Arnold P. Gold Foundation and former President and CEO of the Association of American Medical Colleges; Glenda G. Grace, Esq., Past Senior Vice Chancellor for Institutional Affairs and Strategic Advancement and Special Counsel, CUNY; Maria Fernandez, Esq., Deputy Secretary of Education for New York State; and from the class, Temilolu Adeola, Grace Botwe, and Ramyr Tunis.
