Sounds of the Sixties (SOTS) on BBC Radio 2 used Foot Tapper by the legendary instrumental group The Shadows as its closing theme tune from 1983 until 2017, during the reigns of veteran broadcasters Keith Fordyce, Simon Dee and the late great Brian Matthew ('Good morning avids!').
The instantly recognisable instrumental, written by The Shadows' front men Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch, hit the number one spot in 1963 in the UK.  Sadly it was to The Shadows' last number one because a certain group from Liverpool was about to change pop music forever.
Foot Tapper does just what it says on the tin!
For fans of Sounds of the Sixties, the tune immediately makes one think of Brian Matthew's sign-off catch phrase: 'This is your old mate Brian Matthew saying that's the lot for this week, see you next week'.
With Tony Blackburn now at the helm of SOTS the show has changed considerably and, good as the programme is, the theme tune has been dropped.  A great pity I reckon!
