When I Sing

Join Intercultural Journeys and Sister Cities Girlchoir for an evening celebrating the power and creativity of the artistic voice.

ABOUT THIS EVENT

What happens when we create together, with young women's voices leading the journey? This year, in a special first time collaboration, Intercultural Journeys and Sister Cities Girlchoir embarked on a multi-month project of discovery and creation, with poet Denice Frohman and composers Ruth Naomi Floyd, Martha Gonzalez, VOICES21C, and SCG staff nurturing and guiding the process alongside the young women of SCG.

Their creative prompt: the life, art, and activism of Philadelphia born-and-raised, world renowned opera singer Marian Anderson. With this strong starting point, SCG students explored the power of giving voice to your own unique story, and have created four brand new pieces that premiere on April 30. In addition to the students' work, the evening-length performance features words and music from poet Denice Frohman and composer/vocalist Ruth Naomi Floyd with cellist Stephen Framil as they all shine a spotlight on the power of the creative voice.
