Jacob's son Judah had an incredible calling on his life. He was to be the forebearer of Kings, from King David all the way to Messiah himself.  But we read that after selling Joseph into slavery, Judah fell into sin.  He married a Canaanite, which he wasn't supposed to do, his children were evil, and, let's be real here... he was seeing prostitutes.  Not good.

When Judah was approached by Tamar guised as a prostitute, he gave up to her his staff, his signet, and his cord.  I believe that These items are all he had left that still connected him to his original calling to bring forth the line of Kings.  Now, it's all gone, given away in sin to a hooker.  Judah was fallen.  But the gifts and callings of God are irrevocable.

Fast forward to when all the brothers are in Egypt in front of Joseph and Joseph threatens to kidnap Benjamin.  Fallen Judah, who gave up everything, who had nothign more to lose, steps up, and says, "release the boy and take me instead."  And this action of laying down his life to save another, triggered deliverance for Israel.  YOu see It wasn't enough for Judah to just have that Messianic calling.  He needed to be Messiah-like, Christ-like. And God used his fallen state to awaken that.

Now it's time for Judah to receive his blessiong from his father jacob, and his prophetic calling is activated: The scepter will never depart from Judah nor the staff from between his feet.

Remember He gave up his staff to a hooker in his sin.  In the end, he gains a scepter forever.  What the enemy menat for evil, God used for good.

Conclusion?  When we believe in Messiah Yeshua, we have a prophetic calling.  But God wants us to be Messiah-like.  God can use our toughest times, even the times when we fall, to bring us to a humbled place that ultimately will activate the calling that he gave us in teh beginning.
