A bacteriophage is a virus that infects and replicates within a bacterial host. They are composed of proteins and have DNA i.e.deoxy ribonucleic acid or RNA i.e. Ribonucleic acid as their genetic material.  Bacteriophages are ubiquitous viruses, found wherever bacteria exist. It is estimated that there are bacteriophages on the planet, more than every other organism combined.
