Cells - Introduction
The cell was discovered by an English Botanist, Robert Hooke in 1665. He used a self-designed microscope to observe cells in a cork slice back then.
The body of all organisms is made up of very small units called a cell.
Cells are a fundamental unit of life.
The cell is capable of independent existence and can carry out all the functions which are necessary for a living being. Unicellular organisms are capable of independent existence which shows a cell’s capability to existing independently unit of living organisms and the basic unit of life.
Cell structures
The cell is composed of some basic structures.
Cells are called the structural and functional unit of life because all the living organisms are made up of cells and all the functions that take place inside the organisms are performed by cells.
Plasma membrane called a selectively permeable membrane because it regulates the movement of substances from within to outside of the cell. This means that the plasma membrane allows the entry of some substances while preventing the movement of some other substance.
