Four films titled The Mummy. 85 years of film history and the sweeping changes in the medium can be charted through the remade and rebooted adventures of Imhotep and Kharis.
The Mummy 1932 is one of the earliest entries in Universal's famed Classic Monsters catalogue, boasting an immortal performance from its villainous star, Boris Karloff.
The Mummy 1959 is the third of Hammer's technicolor remakes. It reunites the Hammer Horror dream team; Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, director Terence Fisher, and more. Its reputation is lesser than that of their previous Frankenstein and Dracula re-imaginings, perhaps unfairly.
The Mummy 1999 pulled off the difficult feat of updating a classic monster for modern audiences, creating a blockbuster sensation in the process. Significantly, the 1999 film switched the focal genre from horror to action adventure.
The Mummy 2017 was intended to be the starting point for a new cinematic universe, a Dark Universe if you will. It blended the action focus of the 1999 film with a darker tone. Despite its potential broad appeal and the presence of megastar Tom Cruise, the film was a major commerical and critical flop, killing the Dark Universe before it had a chance.
