Nitesh Kumar won a gold medal in para-badminton in the Paralympics 2024 and thus ended up becoming a household name. And in this exclusive podcast with Republic SportFit, he delves into a number of topics and gives fans some truly fascinating insights as well as some little known factoids about him as a person and an athlete.
He talks about how it is he dealt with the pressure of being in a final and turned the tables back on his opponent to win gold. Nitesh, it is worth noting, did not have a good head-to-head record against his opponent and had lost way more times against him than he had won. But he was still able to overcome the odds and bring home the gold medal.
He also talks about how Virat Kohli, the former India captain and one of the most popular faces in world cricket, is an inspiration for him and how it is that he uses Kohli as a form of motivation for him to do his best.
Nitesh also spoke about how his badminton career started out and the role that IIT played to kickstar a career that would eventually see the ultimate glory for any para-athlete - a Paralympics gold medal.
He also delves into the demands that are placed on a para athlete while talking about how it is he manages to balance 3 important aspects of his life - sport, family and studies.
He further opens up about the state of para-athletes in India right now as well as the kind of support that they are currently getting from the government, and why this is helping them out.
