On June 9, 2022, according to a Xinhua News Agency report, a J-7 fighter jet belonging to the Chinese Air Force crashed near an airport in the vicinity of Xiangyang, Hubei Province, during a training exercise, causing damage to local residential buildings. The pilot successfully ejected from the aircraft. The J-7, a model based on the 1960s-era MiG-21 and primarily used for short-range air combat, ceased production in 2013.
It has been reported that since the 1990s, approximately 140 Chinese military aircraft have crashed. Among these, the J-10 has been notably problematic, with four crashes occurring over five years. These accidents have led to questions about the frequency of crashes involving Chinese military aircraft, which some attrie to the unsuccessful copying of foreign engine technology.
The WS-10 began test flights on the Su-27 between 2001 and 2002, where problems like in-flight disintegration and engine shutdowns were observed. After improvements, the engine was tested on the J-11, equipped with the AL-31F engine, in 2003. In July 2004, a test flight was abruptly interrupted by an engine failure, later identified as a bearing fracture in the WS-10.
