There are many types of unfamiliar noises that could come from under the hood of a car when something failed to work properly. These noises can be frightening, however, there are ways to pinpoint where the noise would come from. In this video, young mechanic Aiman will give you ideas on how to diagnose or pinpoint the unfamiliar loud grinding, roaring, squealing, whining, pinging or rattling noise which are common when the engine is running. This is usually an indication of a bearing that is on the verge of failure. This noise will increase as the engine RPMs increase.

There are multiple places in the engine where bearings are used. Thus, there are several items under the hood that can make this kind of whining sound. The water pump, air conditioner clutch bearing (which will only be heard when the compressor is not engaged), fan belt idler pulleys or belt tensioner, alternator and the power steering pump – these are all possible sources for whining sounds indicating future bearing failure.
If the noise is coming from the area where the pulleys are located, then you could try to run the engine with the belt off so that you can rule out engine-related noise such as valve train, timing chain, detonation, pre-ignition, connecting rod, crankshaft bearing, piston slap or pin and more.
Whining from the power steering pump will get louder when turning the steering wheel from side to side and the usual cause is low power steering fluid.
In our case however, the grinding noise is coming from the AC Compressor. This is on a 7th Gen Honda Accord which is model year 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 & 2007, but the symptoms, diagnosis and possible solution might be applicable to other vehicles as well.
If you turn on the AC and immediately hear a rattling noise, there are a few potential causes. If your AC compressor is beginning to fail, it can make a rattling noise. Banging or clanking noise from AC Compressor may indicate a loose part inside the air compressor—for example a connecting rod, piston pin, crankshaft or internal mount. These noises may indicate your system needs an air compressor replacement. Bubbling or hissing sounds – This usually means your compressor has a refrigerant leak.
In our case, it's actually the ring around the clutch plate was loose. Usually when the AC Clutch is bad, the stator will also be bad.
