I did a 1 year re-review of this computer if you'd like to see how the Plastic ThinkPad is holding up:  Lenovo Thinkpad L540 1 Year Update Re...

A quick down and dirty review of my Thinkpad L540 after a couple of months of use.  The specs:

W8.1
I5 4300 @ 2.6ghz
8gb RAM
7200rpm HDD
16gb NGFF Memory
FHD Display
Intel 4600 Graphics

Few quick additional details... it does indeed have an Ultrabay, but it is misidentified in the manual and is actually a Serial Ultrabay Enhanced Slim.

The battery is a 57 series.  With a straight 57 battery, I get around 3 hours of use.  I have a 57++ (9 cell) on the way to see how it does.

The Intel 4600 graphics do great with most normal requirements.  I haven't played any games on it, but up to 4K HD playback is great.  It multitasks with multiple graphics and video apps running just fine, even with live tiles and charms.  The FHD screen is bright, even, has decent viewing angles, and is great on color (I'm a photographer, so I am picky too).  I hate not having an HDMI port, but an adapter cable has made the Minidisplay port work out alright.

The webcam sucks.  The speakers are pretty damn good.  The Intel WIFI chipset is crud but works.  The cooling fan is quiet, but a bit neurotic about coming on at odd times for odd durations.  During everything I can throw at it, it is always at "future father lap safe" temperature.

The preloaded software is pretty good.  Not too much bloatware.  The Lenovo update program works well and doesn't run in the background.  Pokki is included and IMHO absolutely essential for anybody using W8 that is above the age of 25.  Having lost many a hard drive to shock damage, the Airbag HDD protection software is appreciated - lets see if it works.  I've used Thinkpad support for a hardware configuration problem and they went above and beyond to help me get sorted, so that is still there and strong.

The build quality is "plasticky" seeming, but when you look closer, that's just the shell.  It feels like a tank and the roll cage isn't going to be missed.  I could care less about missing the latches holding the screen down, it stays down just fine on it's own.

I paid less than a grand for this mambo jambo, and it is exceeding my expectations at every turn.  I took a risk picking an L over a T series, but they weren't skimping on the brand name of Thinkpad when they put the logo on these things.  They are solid computers and I bought a lot of beer with the money I saved.
