Afghanistan's Shiite population marked the martyrdom of the Prophet Mohammad's grandson Monday with mass public flagellations despite increasing attacks on their gathering places this year by Islamic State fighters.

Ashoura is celebrated on the 10th day of the month of Muhharam on the Islamic calendar, to commemorate the death of Imam Hussein in Karbala, Iraq in 680 AD.

The date is decided according to the new moon and is the climax of a month of mourning by devout Shiite Muslims.

Shiites make up an estimated 15 percent of Afghanistan's population of around 30 million; most of them ethnic Hazaras.
