Kerning controls the spacing between individual pairs of characters while tracking controls the spacing between groups of characters. These properties can be adjusted in multiple places within InDesign. Tracking and Kerning can be controlled via keyboard shortcuts which also work in many other Adobe programs including Photoshop and Illustrator.

0:00 - Intro
Tracking and Kerning settings can be found in both the Properties and Character panels.

0:38 - Kerning
Kerning controls the spacing between individual pairs of characters.
Place the cursor between a pair of characters and alter the Kerning property to adjust the spacing.
Keyboard shortcut: Alt/Option + left or right arrow key.
Optical and Metrics are automatic modes available to InDesign with which to kern pairs of letters.

2:36 - Tracking
Tracking controls the spacing between groups of characters.
Select a group of characters and alter the Tracking property to adjust the spacing between all of the letters.
Keyboard shortcut: Alt/Option + left or right arrow key (Same as Kerning).
