This is a female tarantula hawk wasp (Pepsis or Hemipepsis species) eating out of my hand. She is sipping juice from half of a grape.

These wasps are notorious for having an extremely painful sting - but, being solitary wasps with no hive or colony to protect, are also quite docile as long as you don't make them feel threatened.

Tarantula hawks reproduce by stinging and paralyzing tarantulas. The paralyzed tarantula is then dragged into an underground burrow (often its former home) where the wasp will lay a single egg on it. She will then bury the opening of the burrow and be on her way - her "mothering" duties are done. When the egg hatches, the developing wasp larva will feed on the tarantula, eating it alive, until it is ready to pupate. When it emerges as an adult wasp, it will dig itself out of the burrow and start the cycle over again.
