In this video I compare the 1990 ProCo Rat 2 (LM308N) distortion pedal and the late 1970's Electro-Harmonix Op-Amp Little Big Muff Pi fuzz pedal using riffs from Cassock by Windhand.

Both pedals have been used extensively by Windhand guitarist and founding member Garrett Morris throughout the past decade.  Check out my in-depth interview with Garrett discussing the history and evolution of his gear and tone here:

The ProCo Rat 2 was manufactured in the late 1980's and early 1990's using the LM308N op-amp.  The pedal achieves its distortion via hard diode clipping, the amount of which is controlled via the Distortion knob on the pedal.  A passive low pass Filter knob removes treble from the pedal's output as it is rotated clockwise.  The Volume control sets the overall level of the pedal.

The late 70's ('78/'79) version of the EHX Big Muff Pi and Little Big Muff Pi used an op-amp based circuit as opposed to the traditional circuit used in the years prior and following.  The Little Big Muff has the sustain set to max internallyl, with the only controls available being a large volume knob and a bass / treble tone switch.  In the bass position, the pedal is utilizing a low pass filter; in the treble position, the pedal is utilizing a high pass filter, each of which result in a more mids forward sound than would be more typical of a standard Big Muff fuzz pedal.
