Nikon AF-S 80-200 F/2.8D - Is it too old to use??

Is it me or why does is seem like some photographers just have to tell you that the latest and greatest gear will make you a better photographer?
First off, they know nothing about my photography situation and experience. Second, why are they immediately suggesting lenses that are most likely overkill without even knowing what kind of photography we do?
