Known to the rest of the country as ‘God’s Little Paradise’, Jaime sets off to the island of Bohol, known for its otherworldly landscape, pint-sized primates, and its friendly people.
Jaime makes her first stop at the Sandugo Marker, the place where the Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legazpi was welcomed by Bohol’s tribal chieftain, Datu Sikatuna with a ritual of blood compact, considered the first international peace treaty in history. The revered Datu Sikatuna was said to have used a bolo – a local machete – in drawing blood.
Today, Bohol’s blacksmiths still make bolos by hand. Home to the finest blacksmiths in the Philippines, Jaime heads to the town of Loay. The smiths of Loay forge steel in fires and hammer them into flat blades which are now used as farming tools. Naturally, Jaime gets busy making a bolo herself.
