In 1993 when Toy Story was currently in production the writers at Pixar were required to show a storyboard reel to a group of Disney executives on Black Friday to give a taste of what the film will be like. At the time and even when production first started, the story was going to be a basic hero vs selfish villain trope, with Buzz as the hero the audience is supposed to identify with and relate to, and Woody as the villain for Buzz to overcome (he was also originally intended to be a ventriloquist dummy but that was scrapped due to his appearance possibly giving children nightmares and making his evil persona seem too blatant and obvious). When the reel was shown, the executives were furious and the presentation was panned for the sole reason of Woody seeming too unlikable for a young viewer to handle, the film's production was shut down for a re-write and Pixar had one week to fix the issues, therefore Woody was rewritten as the charming, well-intended, kind, and compassionate protagonist that we've known him as for the past 24 years.
