Learn how to change the gear oil in your outboard in this video from Boats.net. This is a Mercury 200 Verado outboard, and John will guide you through the process. In many oil changes, you drain at the bottom and fill at the top. Not here. John will show you the location of the vent and drain bolts, and then show you how to use a hand pump to force the lower unit oil into the unit from the drain opening.
You’ll know the lower unit is full when you see oil running out of the vent opening at the top.
How often should you change the lower unit oil on a Mercury outboard? On the Mercury 200XL Verado, you should change the gearcase oil every 100 hours or once a year.
