The Malaysia-Singapore border is usually one of the world’s busiest, with about 300,000 commuters crossing into the city-state each day. But when Malaysia announced it would go on lockdown to fight COVID-19, thousands of commuters had to make the choice between staying at home or keeping their jobs.
“Singapore dollars are three times as valuable,” Yumi Chiah, a commuter worker who left her children and husband in Malaysia for her factory job, told VICE News. “The salaries are not as high in [Malaysia]. We wouldn’t be able to support our family.”
