The Early Rocket Launches of White Sands Proving Ground: Lessons Learned and History Made

The White Sands Proving Ground was established in 1945 to serve as America's largest all-land military testing range. With the help of German rocket scientists under Wernher von Braun, the United States took its first tentative steps into the age of modern rocketry. Although the learning curve was steep and many mistakes were made along the way, United States army personnel perfected the use of the V-2 rocket for scientific purposes. From White Sands Proving Ground came the first images and videos showing the curvature of the Earth. These projects directly led to the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions to put astronauts into space and, eventually, onto the moon.
