Having been experiencing a knocking
Having been experiencing a knocking from the front suspension on my 2008 Smart Fortwo 451 Passion 84 BHP, I decided to investigate further. I found severe play in the o/s (right) front top suspension mounting and upon inspection, found that the upper mounting nut had seized due to water collecting in the mounting cup. Most concerning is that there is an invoice in the vehicle history pack suggesting that this top mounting was replaced by a garage within the last couple of years, for which the previous owner paid over £150. It can clearly be seen from the state of these components that they have not been replaced. Instead, someone filled the top mounting with grey/black sealant to close the gap which must have lasted a mile at best.
In this video, I replace the top mounting. Unfortunately the shock absorber could not be saved due to corrosion and the loss of the hexagonal/torx recess at the top, which would be the means of securing while tightening the upper nut.
Spring replacement will follow. The priority here was to resolve the knocking.
I also replaced the front anti-roll bar (sway bar) bushes and applied red rubber grease during reassembly. For time reasons this process was not recorded however this video shows footage of the new component in place.
