Are you a freelancer? do you freak out when you a get a call from a new client? So here are classic mistakes you can easily avoid on that first call. /// Head to www.thenuschool.com /// I used to FREAK OUT when I got a call from a client. I didn’t know what to say, how much should I charge, or how to make a first good impression. But hell, nailing this call could pay the rent - Here are four mistakes to avoid so you can take it like a boss /// /// First mistake - take the call in a noisy place /// First impressions are everything. This call will affect if you’re getting the project, how much you can charge for it, and if the client likes you or not This is why you should do it like a pro - in a quiet place, where you can sit and take some notes. Don’t do it in a bus station, the mall or somewhere else noisy, Just tell the client: Listen, your project sounds awesome! Let me call you back in an hour, when I’m home and we could speak properly. /// Second mistake - jump into bed without foreplay /// Ready to talk business? Wait a second. First try to understand who is your client, and how did he get your number? Did he get it from another client of yours? is he a friend of a friend? Did he find you in Linkedin? Facebook? Instagram? Tinder? Yellow pages? This will help you break the ice. Let’s say he got your number from your friend Joe. You should tell him your best Joe Story, like how he used to suck in college football. This bonding is important. Because your client is wondering if you’re fun to work with. So be nice and friendly. This can help you win this project, and even allow you to charge more. /// Third Mistake - Too much talking, not enough listening /// Did you hear the phrase “the client is always right?” Well, your client heard it too. That is why you should be listening more than talking. You wanna learn as much as possible - what is the project all about? who is it for? what is the vision? You want to figure out if this project is right for you. what is the timeline and does it sound like a fun project? Let the client talk AS MUCH AS HE WANTS. If he’s not much of a talker, just ask him as many questions as possible. The more info you get, the better. Don’t worry about selling yourself, he called you, remember? //// Mistake number 4: Talk money on the first call //// The scary part is here - the client will ask you: “how much is it going to cost?”. Personally, it used to freak me out. I used to sweat, and feel like something is stuck in my throat. I got no fucking idea how to answer this. Good news is - you shouldn’t talk money on this call. Tell the client that you need time to sit down and do your math. You have to understand what’s the best for you and him. Promise to get back to him within a day or two. He’ll respect that, and you will end the call with the ball in YOUR court.
