The creatures may have been large, but the weather was freezing. The Ice Age is the common name for the Last Glacial Period, the most recent epoch in Earth's history when average global temperatures plummeted drastically and the Polar Ice Cap grew to encompass much of the planet. The event kicked off some 115,000 years ago and continued for more than 100,000. During this time, numerous animal families emerged and disappeared. In instance, the extinction of many large mammal species is thought to have occurred around the end of the Ice Age and the beginning of the current interglacial period (about 50,000 to 5,000 years ago).
A number of factors, including rapid climatic shifts, shifts in flora, and increased human hunting, have been implicated in these extinctions. The woolly mammoth, cave bears, and enormous sloths that reached heights of about 12 feet were all part of this group of megafauna. Read on to learn about some incredible (and sadly, now extinct) creatures that roamed the earth during the Ice Age.
