Coming up, an all-time rock hit is put under the microscope by the entire band and this one has so many layers to it. Time of the Season by the Zombies was released in 1969 going into the 1970s and it was the perfect song as the psychedelic 60 bled into the excessive 70s and it has so many backstories. First of all, It didn’t become a hit until a year after the band had actually broken up. Its unique handclaps and audible breathing made it one of the most unique million-selling hits ever and it contained a phrase that would become part of our everyday vernacular.… Who’s Your Daddy... then the label was ready to give up on the legendary album the song came from Odessey and Oracle… it was saved at the last minute but even then the record’s title was misspelled and it still hasn’t been corrected. Then to add insult to injury when the song hit the top of the charts, with the band broken up a promoter put out a fake version of the band and began to tell people the lead singer had died… The lead singer Colin Bluntstone found out about his own death when reading the paper. the story is next on Professor of Rock… Thank you to this Episodes Sponsor, Zenni GET ZENNI Glasses HERE: imp.i279709.net/vn5gLd ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Executive Producer Brandon Fugal Honorary Producers JLH Fitness, Scott Berg, Grand Illusion, Doug Sailer, Frank Kuna, Cliff Collins II, John Esser, and Paul Castellani ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out my Hand Picked Selection Below Professor's Store - Van Halen OU812 Vinyl Album amzn.to/3tLsII2 - The 80s Collection amzn.to/3mAekOq - 100 Best Selling Albums amzn.to/3h3qZX9 - Ultimate History of 80s Teen Movie amzn.to/3ifjdKQ - 80s to 90s VHS Video Cover Art amzn.to/2QXzmIX - Totally Awesome 80s A Lexicon amzn.to/3h4ilrk - Best In Ear Headphones (I Use These Every Day) amzn.to/2ZcTlIl ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check Out The Professor of Rock Merch Store -bit.ly/ProfessorMerch ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check Out Patron Benefits bit.ly/ProfessorofRockVIPFan Help out the Channel by purchasing your albums through our links! Today’s interview is so cool. Also, take a look at our Patreon where we just released a new documentary. A couple of weeks ago we covered this rock hall of fame’s iconic #2 hit but today we talk with the band about their signature song that had become a true standard of the pop canon. So we induct it into our new standards program for transcending culture, fads, and era…It’s the monumental hit … Time of the Season by the Zombies. As I said in the intro… When the Zombies released the legendary album this song came from 1968s Oddessy and Oracle. An album that’s considered a masterpiece now but back then it almost wasn’t released by Columbia Records, who had little faith in it. It took record man and producer Al Kooper of Blood Sweat and Tears fame to convince then-label head Clive Davis to put it out. And then when the single Time of the Season started making its way to the top of the charts the band was no longer together. In fact, tensions had run high during the recording of this song between lead singer Colin Blunstone and the song’s writer Rod Argent when Rod wanted Colin to sing a certain lyric. Apparently, there was quite a heated discussion when Colin was singing about peace and love. Then the song and record were released and they misspelled the album title Oddessy and Oracle. For years they said it was on purpose but finally, a few years ago the band admitted it was a mistake… One that no one EVER corrected making for a great story. The final straw for the topsy-turvy story of this song is that the song sold a million copies in America and was a hit all over the world but in their native country the UK the song was released three different times and was NEVER a hit.
