Morriston's 100th patient to receive a clot busting drug, which reduces the after effects of stroke, has made a complete recovery, less than a month after treatment.
When she was admitted into Morriston A and E with stroke symptoms, 75 year old Jean Arnold from Bonymaen, Swansea, was treated with thrombolysis, an injection which dissolves the clots causing the strokes, and prevents permanent brain damage occurring.
Dr Tal Anjum, Registrar in Stroke Medicine, explained:

"We only have a three hour window once the symptoms have begun to administer the injection. We often find that stroke patients will go to bed when they start to feel unwell, and when they wake up the next day it is too late for them to have thrombolysis.

"In the past 12 months, only 10% of stroke patients came to hospital in time to receive thrombolysis. People need to be aware of the symptoms and if they are displaying signs of a stroke, they need to get to A and E as soon as possible, to give us the best chance of providing successful thrombolysis."
