Can I use pipe dope with teflon tape together? There seem to be multiple camps when it comes to sealing threads on certain pipe: teflon tape ONLY, pipe dope ONLY, or - for some - BOTH. This video demos a simple DIY trick I did to prevent or stop a leak on a shower arm using teflon tape together with pipe dope. My shower arm is a non-standard one requiring a threaded nipple into a custom female brass fitting, which actually creates 2 joints and potential leak points for me - but once the two pieces are joined, it screws into the brass elbow fitting in the wall like a standard one. Anyway, I wrapped my tape in the direction of the thread 3-4 times and liberally applied pipe dope to the outside of the tape and tightened up using a pipe wrench. I also visually checked and monitored the joints for leaks for up to two weeks after each use. Remember, I am not a plumber or pro, but this worked for me to create a watertight seal.
