DETAIL :
Faro is the capital of Algarve which is one of the sunniest regions of Portugal.
It has 65,000 inhabitants and it is one of the few cities in Europe to have a nature reserve as a border.
Indeed in front of "Faro" is the lagoon "Ria Formosa" which is composed of 5 islands on 17,000 hectares.
This city has a very varied gastronomy due to all the passing travelers who brought back specialties and spices of all kinds.
It was colonized for 1500 years by the Moors who left beautiful oriental architectural traces there.
I recommend you to visit its historic center ("Vila Adentro") which is surrounded by walls and which can be accessed through many entrance arches
On one of them, the most important, which is called "Arco da Vila", you can see storks in their nests.
The city was hit by a very big earthquake in 1755 which severely damaged it.
In the extension, walk through the lively little streets shaded by awnings, in the town centre.
Try to take a look at the passage to one of the most beautiful building in the city, the "Palacete Belmarço" which belonged to a rich merchant and which now houses administrative services.
It was built in 1912
I also recommend that you go see the Carmelite Church (Igreja do Carmo)
Although the interior is superb (if you like gilding and baroque) it is especially in its small garden at the back that you will be most surprised.
Indeed is here the "Capella dos Ossos" (the chapel of the bones)
You will be able to observe a pile of more than 1200 bones and 1000 human skulls
The walls of this small room of barely 24 m2 are lined with the remains of the monks who lived here.
I highly recommend you to visit "Faro" especially if (like me) you are staying in "Olhão"
It's 10 minutes by train (or 20 minutes by bus)
