In the south of Portugal,
Algarve’s Loquat season has begun!
Do you know LOQUATS?
Loquats are unusual among fruit trees in that the flowers appear in the autumn or early winter, and the fruits are ripe at any time from early spring to early summer.
Loquat fruits, growing in clusters, are oval, rounded or pear-shaped, with a smooth or downy, yellow or orange, sometimes red-blushed skin. The fruits are the sweetest when soft and orange. I would say that the taste looks like a pear that would have crossed with an apple and citrus!
The loquat has a high sugar, acid and pectin content. It is eaten as a fresh fruit or mixed well with other fruits in fresh fruit salads. The fruits are also commonly used to make jam or jelly. Firm, slightly immature fruits are best for making pies or tarts.

Today I made a very tasty Loquat Jam, it’s easy and quick to prepare.

• fresh Loquats (peeled and cored)
• white sugar
• some fresh lemon juice
ℹ️ The rule: 1 part sugar for 2 parts fresh loquat fruits
