Pepper Spray vs. Mace - Important Dif...

Just like the word "taser" (or "tazer") is used for stun guns, people commonly throw the word "mace" around when referring to pepper spray. But did you know that pepper spray, also known as oleoresin capsicum (OC), and "mace" (a brand name, but the chemical itself being CS/CN or tear gas) are completely different things? There are a few substantial differences between the two.

Pepper spray is comprised of oleresin capsicum (OC), a natural derivative of pepper plants. Tear gas (known as mace, since its inception in 1964) is a man-made chemical, scientifically known as 2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile. It is also considered to be carcinogenic and banned by international treaty in use during war. Both are typically utilized in an OC/CS mixture in many pepper spray brands, Mace in particular.

Pepper spray is an inflammatory agent, causing the mucous membranes in the body to involuntary react and swell up. Common effects are temporary blindness (up to 15 minutes, generally), coughing, choking and restriction of breathing to life support status. The effects typically last between 30-45 minutes.

Tear gas, or CS, is an irritant. It relies on pain in order to be effective and takes between 5 to 30 seconds to kick in (sometimes upwards to 60 seconds). This makes it very ineffective towards those who have a high tolerance to pain, namely individuals under the influence, intoxicated and the mentally disturbed. Tear gas is commonly used in the military for training, where soldiers learn to build up a resistance to it through exposure. Effects involve tearing (hence the term “tear gas”), coughing, choking and skin irritation.

Pepper spray has an advantage over mace or tear gas because of its inflammatory effects. It will work on even the most disturbed of individuals, making it much more effective over its weaker counterpart. And whereas tear gas is considered a carcinogenic substance, pepper spray is natural and safe. Pepper spray comes off the body fairly quickly, but the smell of tear gas can remain for days before wearing off.
