Tahajjud prayer, a voluntary prayer, is performed at night to seek mental strength, peace, and protection from sin. It is also known as the 'night prayer' and is not mandatory. Despite not being obligatory, many devout Muslims include Tahajjud in their daily routine to worship, seek forgiveness, and connect with Allah. During Tahajjud, believers entrust their worries to Allah, seeking assistance and repentance. This prayer is a means to draw closer to Allah, bringing peace and illumination into the worshipper's life. Tahajjud holds great importance and numerous blessings, being one of the most virtuous Nafl prayers and part of Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) Sunnah. The significance of Tahajjud prayer is highlighted in the Holy Quran and various Hadiths.
"And rise at 'the last' part of the night, offering additional prayers, so your Lord may raise you to a station of praise." (Quran, 17:79)
Those who perform Tahajjud prayer regularly are sure to earn the blessings of Allah. It is also said that this prayer brings a Muslim closer to the Almighty and his/her life is filled with peace and brightness. The holy Quran emphasizes the importance of Tahajjud prayer.
"who spend the night prostrating themselves before their Lord and standing " (Qur'an,  25:64)
"And glorify Him during part of the night and at the fading of the stars." (Qur'an, 52:49)
When is the Tahajjud Prayer?
The Tahajjud prayer, known as the night prayer, is typically performed after Isha (the obligatory nightly prayer) and before Fajr (the obligatory morning prayer). Ideally, it is prayed during the last third of the night, just before Fajr. However, it can be performed at any time throughout the night after Isha. The last third of the night is considered a highly blessed time. During this period, Allah SWT descends to the lowest heaven, ready to answer the prayers of any believer who is worshipping Him.
Narrated by Abu Huraira:
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "Our Lord, the Blessed, the Superior, descends every night to the nearest heaven to us when the last third of the night remains. He says, 'Is there anyone praying to Me, so that I may answer their prayers? Is there anyone asking from Me, so that I may grant their requests? Is there anyone seeking My forgiveness, so that I may forgive them?'"
Sahih al-Bukhari 1145
Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported that he (the Messenger of Allah) was asked as to which prayer was most excellent after the prescribed prayer, he said:
أَفْضَلُ الصَّلاَةِ بَعْدَ الصَّلاَةِ الْمَكْتُوبَةِ الصَّلاَةُ فِي جَوْفِ اللَّيْلِ
Translation: "The best prayer after the prescribed prayer is the prayer in the middle of the night."
We are encouraged to invest a portion of the night to observe these Sunnah acts of worship. This is acknowledged by Allah S.W.T. Himself as mentioned in the Quran:
إِنَّ نَاشِئَةَ ٱلَّيْلِ هِىَ أَشَدُّ وَطْـًٔا وَأَقْوَمُ قِيلًا. إِنَّ لَكَ فِى ٱلنَّهَارِ سَبْحًا طَوِيلًا. وَٱذْكُرِ ٱسْمَ رَبِّكَ وَتَبَتَّلْ إِلَيْهِ تَبْتِيلًا
"Indeed, worship in the night is more impactful and suitable for recitation. For during the day you are over-occupied 'with worldly duties'. 'Always' remember the Name of your Lord, and devote yourself to Him wholeheartedly. (Qur'an, 73:6-8)
Performing Tahajjud Prayer:
The method of performing Tahajjud Prayer is similar to the way Two Rak’ah Obligatory/voluntary Prayer is done. It consists of a minimum of two raka’at, as instructed by the Prophet Muhammed PBUH.
Tahajjud prayers can vary from two to twelve rak’ahs, depending on your capability. However, it is recommended to at least perform two rak’ahs with one salutation (salam) after every two rak’ahs.
Witr prayer should be the final prayer at night.
Start by performing Wudu (ablution) after waking up in the middle of the night. Initiate the Sunnah Tahajjud prayer by reciting the Niyyah (Intention) to pray. Begin with the Takbir (Allahu-akbar) and proceed with a two raka’at prayer. Conclude the prayer after two rak’ahs with salam.
Include personal prayers (dua) after completing the desired number of rakats, ensuring they are sincere and devoted to Allah. After Tahajjud prayer, conclude with Witr Salah, which is the final prayer of the night. According to Ibn 'Umar, it is recommended to end the night prayer with Witr, as advised by the Prophet (ﷺ). Although an additional prayer, the Prophet (PBUH) never omitted it, even during his travels.
