Former US President and current Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has significantly altered his stance on Bitcoin and cryptocurrency. Previously a vocal critic, Trump labeled Bitcoin a "scam" and expressed concerns about its use in illegal activities, preferring the dominance of the US dollar. In 2019 and again in 2021, he reiterated his negative views, emphasizing Bitcoin's competition with the dollar.
However, Trump's perspective has shifted over the past few years. During the 2021 NFT boom, he made millions from selling digital trading cards and has since become more favorable towards crypto. At a recent event at Mar-A-Lago, Trump spoke positively about cryptocurrencies, criticizing the US government's hostile stance that drives crypto entrepreneurs abroad and expressing a desire to make the US a leader in the crypto industry.
In May 2024, Trump continued this rhetoric at the Libertarian National Convention, advocating for the right to self-custody of crypto and promising to stop current administration efforts to regulate the industry harshly. He committed to ensuring the future of Bitcoin and crypto remains in the US.
Despite his newfound support, Trump does not currently own Bitcoin, although he possesses approximately $11 million in other crypto assets, including NFTs and various altcoins. His presidential campaign accepts crypto donations through Coinbase, which are immediately liquidated.
