Videos can be made to fix a composition easily in After Effects. The composition is the canvas size, if your video doesn’t fit then there will be a black or transparent border around the video. When a video doesn’t fit you will need to resize the layer. Resizing a layer will stretch it out and may make the video look worse and of lower quality. The easiest way to fit a video to the composition is to use the “Fit to Comp” transform option.
A video can also be resized by using the scale feature. The scale settings can be opened by pressing “S” on your keyboard. Increasing the scale numbers will make the video larger, and decreasing the scale will make the image size smaller. There are two scale values, the left being the width, and the right being the height. By default, both the width and height will be adjusted when one of the scale options is changed. This happens because the scale values are linked, which is indicated by the link icon. Clicking on the icon will unlink the width and height scales allowing you to change the size individually.
