STORYLINE:

Diplomatic efforts continued on Wednesday to speed up the formation of a new representative government in Afghanistan in the wake of advances over the weekend and this week by the opposition Northern Alliance.

The Northern Alliance, with the help of the US led military campaign, have routed Taliban forces from huge tracts of Afghanistan, and now occupy the capital Kabul which they took early on Tuesday morning.

A spokesman for the former King of Afghanistan, Zaher Shah, said on Wednesday that the King is ready to go back to his country as soon as the people ask him.

The monarch issued his statement to all Afghans at the start of Ramadan and called for peace and security in their country.

The King considers himself as a father figure who may be able to help pull together a coalition to lead a post-Taliban government.

A Pashtun from southern Afghanistan, the King has been attempting discussions with members of the Northern Alliance, primarily Uzbeks and Tajiks.

On Tuesday, US envoy James Dobbins said he had met Zaher Shah for talks about Kabul's future government.
