WCIU Channel 26 - The Stock Market Observer (Excerpt, 10/21/1971)

Here's perhaps the earliest extant excerpt ever, the first half-hour, of the long-running Stock Market Observer on WCIU Channel 26. This came from a (relatively poor quality) Umatic tape transfer of what appears to be 2" quad tape.

This program, which was a part of the station's schedule from its 1964 start-up until the 1990's, is today regarded as the forerunner of such business channels of our time as CNBC, CNNfn, Fox Business and Bloomberg.  Until late 1974, it was broadcast only in black-and-white. (The next day's opening half-hour can be seen here: WCIU Channel 26 - Station Sign-On and... .)

On this edition are (?), Jack Hosty [John R. Hosty Sr.], Alan Grigg, William Carr, Ben Larson, Eddie Ballantine, and Susan Plumridge.

Includes:

Show opening, leading to "Market Reprise" look at the Dow Jones industrials (their indices in those days - on the previous day from this, at 855.65 - roughly equal how up or down the market finishes in one day in our time) and New York Stock Exchange trading

Commercial: U.S. Steel

A look at American Stock Exchange activity for the day, ending the "Market Reprise"

Then, the "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" segment (sponsored by Lamson Bros. & Co.), with moderator Jack Hosty and his guests, Alan Grigg and William Carr. The "Yesterday" analysis starts with Morgan Guaranty's cut of the prime rate, and the market reaction; Alan is judged as being correct on his bearishness. Jack then interrupts the discussion to promote Lamson's tax letter, then they pick up where they left off with the "Today" analysis before Jack promotes the Nuveen Tax-Exempt Bond Fund and then thanks his guests to end the segment.

In the world and national scene (read by Ben Larson):

- U.S. troop deaths in Vietnam lowest in six years, while Communists in Paris peace talks accuse U.S. of ramping up war effort

- American Bar Association turns down two of six Supreme Court prospects (he refers to ? Douglas who will have more at 9:15am)

Commercial: Ozark Airlines

Eddie Ballantine reads the news of London commodities and exchange rates, and London, Paris and Tokyo markets; plus news on foreign business transactions and activities

Ben reads the weather forecast, with temperature readings at various Chicago areas

Commercial: Miller Beer ("If You've Got the Time..." already in place then)

Susan Plumridge begins the look of 10 most active, 10 most up and 10 most down stocks on the New York Stock Exchange

Commercial: Coca-Cola (they already broke in their "I'd Like To Teach The 'World To Sing" campaign at that point)

Susan continues her analysis of NYSE stock activity; the recording ends before the next commercial.

This aired on local Chicago TV on Thursday, October 21st 1971 during the 8:30am to 9:02am timeframe.

About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:

The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 4,700+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at:
