La avenida Callao es una importante arteria del centro de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, Argentina, que fue declarada Área de Protección Histórica (Aph) por el Gobierno de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires en septiembre de 2009.
La existencia de la Avenida Callao se remonta hasta fines del siglo XVIII, tiempos en que el área que actualmente recorre era prácticamente rural. Era el ejido de Buenos Aires, la franja alrededor de la ciudad que el fundador Juan de Garay había destinado a pastoreo y agricultura en 1580. En aquellas épocas la actual avenida era un angosto camino de tierra en donde abundaban los tunales y pantanos, por lo cual se lo conocía como Calle de las Tunas.
Pero fue con la asunción de Bernardino Rivadavia como ministro del Gobernador Martín Rodríguez (1821) que este camino adquirió su ancho y nombre actuales. Rivadavia pretendía abrir una Avenida de Circunvalación que rodeara al aún pequeño centro urbano de Buenos Aires, de manera que contrató al ingeniero Felipe Senillosa para que trazara los planos, dándole un ancho de 30 varas, en notable contraste con las apenas 11 varas que tenían las angostas calles coloniales trazadas por Garay.
La nueva avenida fue abierta hacia 1822, y se le dio el nombre de Callao en honor al principal puerto del Perú en la Provincia Constitucional del Callao, en donde las tropas peruanas resultaron victoriosas ante el ataque español en la guerra de la independencia suramericana.
