Once a small town that flourished around busy trade routes, Panvel today has become a popular destination among homebuyers and investors.
Known as the center point to enter Mumbai from other parts of the state, the locality has gained significant traction due to its good connectivity via road and sea and continual infrastructure development.
Formerly known as Paneli or Panelim, Panvel is surrounded by the mountains of Matheran to the east and south-east. It is adjacent to the proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport, forming its eastern boundary. The locality includes Old Panvel, New Panvel East and New Panvel West also known as Khanda Colony.
Many important freeways meet and pass through Panvel, making it a significant junction from the economic point of view. The locality is home to a few major industries such as MIDC, Larsen & Toubro Limited, Reliance, Hindustan Organics Chemicals Ltd, ONGC and IPCL. Major commercial activities are present in sectors 15 to 19 of New Panvel.
DAV Public School, Shantiniketan Public School and St Joseph’s High School, and Dr. KM Vasudevan Pillai Campus are prominent educational institutions in Panvel.
Hospitals like Sai Child Care hospital, M.G.M Hospital and Susath Hospital are present in the locality.
There are several retail outlets and shopping arcades like Sai Arcade and K Mall in and around Panvel. Orion Mall and Little World Mall are also nearby. For recreational purposes, the locality also has many well-maintained gardens.
NH-48, JNPT Road, Mumbai-Goa Highway, Uran Road, Mumbai-Pune Highway, Panvel Road, Sion-Panvel Expressway, Kalamboli Link Road are major roads passing through Panvel, connecting it to other parts of Maharashtra.
There are two bus terminals in the city; a State Transport Stand near national highway running predominant ST bus services, which comes under MSRTC, and the NMMT bus Stand near railway station.
