Perast is one of the most beautiful little places in the Bay of Kotor. This picturesque town lives up to its reputation as one of the best-kept secrets in the Adriatic Sea. Perast is a small town located in an area of outstanding natural beauty, which has been protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is famous for its 16 churches and 17 formerly grand palaces. One of the most notable churches in Perast is the church of Sveti Nikola, located on the main square. The church was built in 1691 and is known for its impressive bell tower, which is 55 meters tall. In 1713, the bells of Sveti Nikola were the biggest in Europe. Sveti Djordje (St. George) island and Gospa od Škrpjela (Our Lady of the Rock) are two islands worth visiting in the Adriatic Sea. Gospa od Škrpjela, called initially "Madonna dello Scarpello" in Venetian, is particularly interesting because it is the only island in the Adriatic Sea that was artificially built. It was constructed on a rock (called Škrpjel) after two Venetian Perast sailors found a Virgin Mary icon in 1452. If you visit this island, you can see the church and a museum. The museum contains prehistoric artefacts and recent pieces from the town's maritime population. The Island of Saint George is a small island located off the coast of Perast in the Bay of Kotor. Unlike Our Lady of the Rocks, this island is a natural one. It is home to Saint George Benedictine monastery, which dates back to the 12th century, and an old graveyard that contains the remains of the nobility from Perast and the surrounding area of the Bay of Kotor. The town museum is located in Captain Visko Bujovic's palace and is an exciting stop to see some of the history of Perast and the whole Bay of Kotor. It's filled with a rich collection of furniture and artefacts donated by the local population. The town has several restaurants around its waterfront, and the cuisine served at these restaurants ranges from traditional to international and includes deliciously fresh seafood. Perast is an ideal location to stay in the Bay of Kotor. It has a beautiful view towards the peaks around the Orjen and Lovćen mountain ranges. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, this tiny place is stunningly attractive and a must-visit!
