This video from OMG Revision looks at the case study example of Boscastle for flood management. You need to understand why the management was needed – it suffered from a devastating flood in August 2004 due to torrential rainfall. What was done – they spent £4.5 million widening the river, rebuilding the carpark, altering bridges and adding storm drains. The social, economic and environmental impacts. Social impacts including the feeling of safety within the community due to decreased risk of flooding, however during the construction the noise pollution and localised traffic congestion reduced quality of life of local people. Economic impacts - £4.5 million is a lot of money and could have been invested elsewhere, however many properties and businesses are now protected and this reduces economic costs in the longer term. Environmental – the landscape was changed, and this may have had an impact on local ecosystems, however the scheme was developed to blend in with the local environment and used local building materials making it sustainable.
